# Try a Schema Template

Try out a schema template's field and schema locks in a sandbox editor before applying it to a policy.

Trying a template opens a sandbox editor. It is separate from the **Builder / Preview** tabs on the schema configuration page and from policy [Dry Run](/docs/develop/guardian/workspace/policies/dry-run.md).

### Prerequisites

* You are signed in as a Standard Registry user.
* You can read schema templates.
* The template has at least one schema.

### Steps

1. Open the **Schema Templates** grid and select the target template to open its configuration page.
2. Select **Try Template** in the action bar, next to **Export**.
3. Browse the template's schemas in the sidebar, just like on the schema configuration page.
4. Try adding, editing or removing fields. Locked fields and schemas behave exactly as they would once the template is applied to a policy.
5. Select **Done** to return to the template configuration page.

### Result

Nothing you do while trying the template is saved. **Save all**, **Export**, **Publish**, **New Version**, **New schema** and schema deletion are all unavailable while trying a template - the page exists only to try out what applying the template would feel like. Closing the page or selecting **Done** discards every change.

### Troubleshooting

**Why can't I save my changes?**

The try-template page is a sandbox. It never calls save, publish, export or delete - it only shows how the template's current configuration would behave once applied. To make a real change, edit the template schema itself from its configuration page.

**Why don't I see the New schema button?**

The try-template page only shows the template's existing schemas. Add new schemas from the template configuration page instead.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://guardian.hedera.com/docs/develop/guardian/workspace/schema-templates/try-a-schema-template.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
